Kolkata, July 5: Students of Jadavpur University in Kolkata have staged protests after the administration has taken a call to scrap the entrance tests for six undergraduate courses in the Arts Stream this academic year. The subjects for which the tests have been cancelled are- Comparative Literature, History, Political Science, Philosophy, English and Bengali. The University will now enrol students based on the class 12 board exam results.

University Registrar Chiranjib Bhattacharjee as quoted in an Indian Express report said, “The Executive Council has decided that entrance exams for admission to the Arts subjects will not be held only this year. This decision has been taken to address legal questions over the exams and not to harass students awaiting certainty of the admission process.”

The University's chancellor has complained that students had confined him to a room, and he expressed his displeasure at the way they have been protesting. According to a PTI report, present students and teachers are unhappy with the decision because they believe that scrapping the admission test, which has been going on for the last 40 years will lower the academic standard of the university.
