New Delhi, February 20: The University Grants Commission has identified 32 fake universities across 12 states as of February 2026, raising serious concerns about student safety and the credibility of higher education in India. According to the latest data, the number of unauthorised institutions has increased from 20 to 32 in the past two years.

The UGC has warned students and parents not to take admission in these institutions, as they are not recognised under the UGC Act and do not have the authority to award valid degrees.

New States Added to Fake Universities List

Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Arunachal Pradesh have been newly added to the list, each reporting one fake university. The commission also issued a specific alert against Global Human Peace University in Bengaluru, clarifying that it is not authorised to operate as a university. DTE Karnataka Diploma Result 2026 Declared at dtek.karnataka.gov.in; Know How To Download.

Other states where fake universities have been detected include Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Why Fake Universities Are a Serious Risk

The UGC stated that such institutions mislead students by offering degrees without statutory approval. Degrees issued by fake universities are not valid for government jobs, higher education admissions or competitive examinations. CBSE Class 12 Physics Exam 2026 Analysis: Moderate, Concept-Based and NCERT-Focused, Say Teachers.

Education experts note that these institutions often attract students with promises of quick degrees, low fees and flexible courses. Some falsely claim foreign affiliations or international recognition, making it difficult for students to identify legitimate universities.

The UGC has urged students to verify the official list of recognised universities on its website before applying for admission.
