Aurangabad, Jan 17: Using fake Aadhaar, conmen here sold off two prime plots measuring 4,000 sq ft each, belong to a former tax commissioner.

The prime suspect, identified as Azam Panga Abdul Rehman Khan, was arrested by by police from Mumbai on Tuesday. He has been remanded into police custody till January 18. A search operation has been launched to nab his accomplices.

The victim, Omkar Ganpeet Kanveer, is a retired official of the Income Tax department. While Ganveer had invested in the two plots in Aurangabad, he has been staying at his Mumbai residence.

In order to avoid suspicion Khan and his associates had got the general power of attorney (GPA) registered at the Mumbai-based registrar of properties, the police said.

While the gang sold off the plots of Ganveer, they handed over the possession of a neighbouring land which was owned by a Surat-based woman. "When the owner of these plots arrived in the city, she raised a hue and cry and approached police," said the officer speaking to TOIThe matter was then brought to the notice of Ganveer who registered a complaint against the unidentified conmen.
