Madhya Pradesh is set to witness a tight fight between the Congress and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is looking at a fourth term in the state, the Congress has said that it is confident of winning.

Opinion polls earlier this year have indicated a mixed picture in the state. While an ABP Opinion Poll indicated a victory for the Congress with 122 seats, a Times Now poll has predicted that the BJP will retain power in the state.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has set up over 11,000 new polling booths in Madhya Pradesh, the maximum among the five states having assembly polls, as part of its efforts to ensure a high voter turnout during the elections. CEO VL Kantha Rao also said the state has witnessed more than double the seizure of suspect cash, drugs and other illegal inducements used to lure voters, as compared to the last polls of 2013.
