Mumbai, June 21: The fares of Mumbai local AC train which operates between Churchgate to Virar railway stations are set to increase from June 25, according to the railway officials. The revised fare, which will be applicable from next week, will be 1.3 times more than the first class ticket prices as said the officials. As of now, the price of AC local train tickets is 1.2 times the that of the first-class tickets of the local train.

According to the railways, the previous fare was a discount offer, which was introduced for six months to attract ridership. The new price is introduced since the offer is set to end on June 23. Meanwhile, they also feel that a slight increase in ticket fare price will not pinch the pocket of commuters.

After the fare hike, a ride between Churchgate to Mumbai Central in the AC train will cost Rs. 65, a Rs.5 increase from the previous price of Rs. 60. Subsequently, the price for the seasonal and monthly passes will also escalate accordingly.

At present, the western railway runs 12 trips of AC local trains on a single rack daily. It carries only 1,300 commuters, which is less than half of its carrying capacity. But the Mumbai railways authorities are still keen to go ahead with the fare hike decision.
