Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya has urged Mumbai Police to investigate actor Imran Khan’s participation in a protest in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), questioning whether the actor, whom he described as a foreign citizen, was permitted to join the agitation. Somaiya has sought clarity on the matter and called for appropriate action.
The development comes after Mumbai Police detained Imran Khan and several other protesters near August Kranti Maidan in south Mumbai on Saturday, October 10. The gathering was organised in support of the CJP’s protest in Delhi against alleged electoral roll irregularities and to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Somaiya wrote to Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner Manoj Kumar Sharma on October 10, seeking an inquiry into the actor’s participation in the protest. The BJP leader questioned whether Imran Khan had obtained the necessary permission to participate in the agitation. He also raised concerns about the actor’s citizenship status and called on the police to examine the matter. Imran Khan Detained in Mumbai During CJP Solidarity Protest at August Kranti Maidan.
In a post on social media, Somaiya sought action against the actor and demanded his deportation. However, the allegation regarding Khan’s citizenship and the legality of his participation has not been independently established in the reports cited.
Imran Khan Detained During Mumbai CJP Protest
Imran Khan was among those detained by Mumbai Police near August Kranti Maidan as officers restricted access to the protest site. According to reports, the actor was intercepted near Nana Chowk while attempting to join the gathering. Speaking to reporters before being taken away, Khan said he was not associated with any organisation and had no specific demands. He described himself as a concerned Mumbai resident who wanted to understand the restrictions imposed on people’s movement.
The actor also questioned the police action, asking why he was being manhandled. In a social media post from a police vehicle, he made a light-hearted remark about being taken for a drive.
Mumbai Protest Held in Support of CJP
The Mumbai gathering was organised in solidarity with the CJP’s planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The group has been protesting over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, while demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Mumbai Police deployed personnel and erected barricades around August Kranti Maidan to restrict access to the site. Several protesters were detained as authorities moved to prevent the gathering.
Those reportedly detained included Imran Khan, his girlfriend Lekha Washington and other participants. The protest in Mumbai coincided with heightened security and preventive detentions in Delhi ahead of the CJP demonstration. As of October 11, Somaiya’s demand for an inquiry had brought the actor’s citizenship status and participation in the protest into focus. Any further action will depend on the police examination of the allegations.
