The 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) has revised the eligibility criteria and vacancy structure for its contract-based consultant positions, opening more opportunities for younger professionals while reducing the number of senior consultant posts. The Commission has set August 31, 2026 as the deadline for applications for 23 consultant positions.

The revised guidelines were issued on August 11 and cover experience requirements, age limits and the number of vacancies in different consultant categories. The changes are part of the Commission's ongoing work on pay, pensions and related matters for central government employees and pensioners.

8th Pay Commission Consultant Vacancies

Under the revised guidelines, the 23 positions are divided into three categories:

  • Consultant (Senior Consultant): Two vacancies for candidates with more than 10 years of relevant experience and an upper age limit of 45 years.
  • Consultant: Five vacancies for candidates with more than six years of relevant experience and an upper age limit of 40 years.
  • Consultant (Young Professional): 16 vacancies for candidates with more than two years of relevant experience and an upper age limit of 32 years.

The number of senior consultant vacancies has been reduced from five to two, while Young Professional positions have increased from 10 to 16. What Are The Educational Qualifications?

The revised guidelines specify several educational backgrounds for applicants.

Candidates with a Master's degree or MBA in Human Resource, Industrial Relations or similar subjects can apply. The Commission has also included B.Tech and M.Tech graduates with relevant experience in IT, data analysis and data visualisation.

An aptitude for general research, compiling information, collating inputs and preparing draft notes is considered desirable. Knowledge of Excel or spreadsheets and experience in preparing presentations are mandatory for all consultant categories. Preference may be given to candidates with experience in pay structures, compensation packages or establishment matters.

The remuneration varies according to the category and whether the engagement is full-time or part-time.

The engagement is for one year or until the tenure of the Commission, whichever is earlier. An extension beyond one year may be considered based on the consultant's performance and professionalism.

How To Apply For 8th Pay Commission Jobs

Interested candidates must apply through the prescribed online process. The Commission has clarified that applications will not be accepted through physical copies, email or hard copy submissions.

The application deadline is August 31, 2026. Candidates who had already applied under the earlier notification do not need to submit a fresh application.

Selected candidates will receive their engagement offer through email and will have seven days to communicate their consent. The Commission said a maximum of 30 days would be allowed for joining after the engagement letter is emailed, with candidates available to join immediately likely to receive preference.

What Will 8th CPC Consultants Do?

The consultants will assist the Commission with research and analysis related to salaries, pay structures, allowances and pensions. Their work will also include examining existing compensation structures and studying representations and memoranda submitted to the Commission.

Other responsibilities include estimating the fiscal impact of proposals, reviewing gratuity and bonus mechanisms, collecting information from government ministries and departments and analysing data from reports, databases and surveys.

Legal research, data interpretation and preparation of reports and presentations are also part of the assigned work.

8th Pay Commission Latest Update

The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted by the Government of India through a notification dated November 3, 2025. The Commission is headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, with Prof. Pulak Ghosh as part-time member and Pankaj Jain as Member-Secretary.

The Commission is currently conducting consultations with employee associations, unions and other stakeholders as it works towards its recommendations on pay, pensions and related matters. Its official website continues to list stakeholder meetings and visits scheduled across different states and Union Territories.

The latest consultant recruitment changes do not amount to a decision on the fitment factor, salary hike or revised pay matrix. Those matters remain part of the Commission's broader consultation and recommendation process.
