New Delhi, December 30: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Monday extended the deadline for taxpayers to link permanent account number (PAN) with Aadhaar till March 2020. The order was passed by the Income Tax department for all taxpayer who have PAN as on July 1, 2017 and are required to link their PAN with their Aadhaar number.

Informing about the latest development, Income Tax said via its Twitter handle The due date for linking of PAN with Aadhaar as specified under sub-section 2 of Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 has been extended from 31st December, 2019 to 31st March, 2020." According to the sub section of 2 of Section 139AA of Income Tax act, any taxpayer who possess a PAN as on July 1, 2017 is required to link his or her Pan with His or Her Aadhaar number, else the PAN becomes invalid. As per the rules, if PAN becomes invalid the person would be deemed not to possess a PAN. Also, other provisions of IT Act will apply, which might lead to a penalty of 10,000 under section 292B, higher deduction of TDS due to non-availability of PAN, among others.

In this year it is to be known that the Income Tax has extended the deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar number four times. Earlier, the deadline was extended till March 31, 2019, following which it was again extended till September 30 and again till December 31.
