Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of Dr Akash Kumar, a young doctor at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), who was shot dead during a robbery in Karachi’s Clifton area, police said on Wednesday, July 15. Authorities said the suspects were arrested after an investigation involving CCTV footage, recovered weapons and surveillance operations.

Dr Akash Kumar was killed on Monday, July 13, near Teen Talwar after armed robbers intercepted his vehicle and escaped with around Rs2 million that he was carrying after withdrawing cash from a private bank. The incident triggered protests among doctors and drew condemnation from medical bodies over concerns about security in Karachi. Pakistan: Another Minor Hindu Girl Abducted, Forcibly Converted and Married in Sindh.

Police Arrest 3 Suspects in Akash Kumar Murder Case

According to a press release issued by South Zone police, officers arrested three suspects after a suspicious vehicle was spotted in the Defence area on Tuesday night. Police said officials chased the vehicle and arrested the suspects, recovering mobile phones, three pistols and a white Suzuki Alto allegedly used during the crime. The vehicle was reportedly fitted with fake registration plates.

The arrested suspects were identified as Suresh, Ram Chand and Anil. South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Asad Raza said the suspects had been living in Karachi for a considerable period but belonged to Daharki, Thul and Naushahro Feroze. Pakistan: Elderly Man Kills Wife for Refusing S*x in Karachi, Confession Video Goes Viral.

How the Robbery and Killing Unfolded

Police said Dr Akash had visited a bank on Monday to withdraw Rs5 million. According to investigators, he kept Rs2 million with him while the remaining amount was placed separately.

The police said Dr Akash, along with his father and cousin, was travelling to another bank when four armed men on two motorcycles intercepted their vehicle near Teen Talwar.

According to the police account, one of the suspects opened the car door and fired at Dr Akash. He was later shifted to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

A case was registered at Frere Hall Police Station on the complaint of Dr Akash’s cousin under Sections 34, 397 and 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code, relating to common intention, robbery with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt, and murder.

Police Say Bank Insider Helped Gang

Police said during initial interrogation, the arrested suspects claimed they had monitored Dr Akash before the robbery.

According to the police statement, an accomplice inside the first bank allegedly informed the gang about the victim’s appearance and the amount withdrawn, allowing them to intercept the vehicle as it moved towards another bank.

Investigators said the arrested men were allegedly part of a gang involved in robberies and street crimes across Karachi. Police said raids were underway to arrest other suspected accomplices.

CCTV Footage Helped Identify Suspects

During a press conference, DIG Asad Raza said investigators reviewed more than 100 CCTV files from different locations to identify and track the suspects. “It helped us unearth the identity of the suspects and arrest them,” he said.

DIG Raza added that one of the arrested suspects had recently been released on bail, another was facing trial in a case and the third had been declared an absconder. Police ruled out personal enmity as a possible motive behind the killing.

CIA DIG Muqaddas Haider said Karachi recorded 30 cases of robbery with murder during the year so far, compared with 48 cases reported during the first seven months of 2025.

“This is a decline of at least 37 per cent,” he said, adding that robbery cases involving injuries had also declined by more than 30 per cent. Officials acknowledged that street crime remained a major concern but said there had been no overall increase compared with last year.

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar said the provincial government was committed to ensuring justice in the case. He said he would personally monitor the investigation and directed Karachi authorities to increase security in sensitive areas, strengthen police patrols and intensify operations against criminal groups.

“There will be no compromise on law and order, and the provincial government is utilising all available administrative and legal resources to safeguard citizens,” he said. Police said further investigation is underway and efforts continue to arrest remaining suspects and alleged facilitators.
