The health scare began on Saturday, July 25, when 69 students from a residential school in the Dharni tehsil (Melghat region) developed symptoms after dinner and were rushed to the Sub-District Hospital in Dharni. On Sunday, July 26, similar symptoms were reported among roughly 70 additional students across government residential facilities in Bijudhavdi and Savlikheda, taking the overall number of affected children past 100. Health officials reported that the vast majority of students have since responded well to treatment and have been discharged. As of Monday, 32 students remain under medical observation at the Dharni facility, where doctors describe their condition as stable and out of danger.
Authorities have pointed to meals supplied by a central kitchen based in Temli village, which caters to multiple tribal residential schools across the district. A formal police complaint has been lodged against the central kitchen operator. Siddarth Shukla, the Tribal Development Project Officer for Dharni, confirmed that officials from the health department have seized food and water samples from the facility for laboratory testing to identify the exact source of contamination.
The incident has sparked concern among parents and local representatives regarding hygiene standards and food safety oversight in state-run tribal schools. Local leaders, including Amravati MP Balwant Wankhede, visited the hospital and schools to evaluate the situation, urging administrative action and an immediate review of the central kitchen's catering operations.
