Cockroach-infested kitchens, uncovered raw meat, and filthy utensils have prompted the Tukaram Mundhe-led Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to suspend 199 eatery licenses following an extensive statewide enforcement drive.
Statewide Inspections and Regional Breakdown
The sweep - covering hotels, clubs, and dhabas between May 25 and August 31 - was intensified under the leadership of FDA chief Tukaram Mundhe, reports PTI. Widespread Health Code Violations
According to the FDA, the inspections exposed severe violations of Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Act. Authorities documented a lack of clean water and proper drainage, improper refrigerator temperatures, and widespread cockroach infestations. Other infractions included raw chicken stored in open containers, unsealed cut vegetables, and dirty utensils. Officials also noted that many establishments failed to maintain worker medical records, mandatory FoSTaC training certificates, laboratory testing logs, and purchase proofs from licensed vendors.
Crackdown Expands to Kolkata
A parallel enforcement drive is underway in West Bengal, where the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has issued suspension notices to 54 establishments. Eateries, sweet shops, and hotels across 144 wards have been ordered to remain closed until they implement necessary safety upgrades and receive clearance from the civic body. Following an initial release of 40 establishments on Tuesday, September 8, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation published its final list on Wednesday, September 9. The updated roster comprises 30 establishments facing temporary license suspensions alongside 24 whose registrations have been suspended.
