Chennai, December 29: The Tamil Nadu police on Sunday detained eight people -- including a boy -- in Chennai's Besant Nagar area, when they were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR). The police detained the protesters while they were drawing kolams (rangoli) on the streets to mark their protests in peaceful manner.

According to initial reports, Chennai city police detained seven people for making Kolam on the streets as a mark of their protests against the CAA, NRC and NPR. However, some reports claim that four people were detained, and later they were released. Also, reports state that all the people were detained from Besant Nagar in Chennai and then taken to the J5 Shastri Nagar police station. This is not the first time that a crackdown by Tamil Nadu Police has came to light. Earlier, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), under the Union Home Ministry, asked a German student to leave the country for participating in the anti-CAA protests in Chennai. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Police has registered a case against 1000 unidentified students of Aligarh Muslim University for violence which broke out during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act on December 15. Apart from this, over 1,100 people have been arrested and 5,500 were detained in connection with vandalising and damaging public property. Reports even state that 19 people were killed in clash and 61 were injured. UP Police had recently agreed that they had fired on some violent protesters to maintain law and order.
