How Snoring Pushed a Couple's Marriage to the Brink of Divorce, Then Saved It
A Bhopal couple nearly divorced due to the husband’s loud snoring, which left the wife unable to sleep. During counseling, she said, 'I cannot stay awake all night.' Family counselor Rita Tuli suggested a 3-month separation. The couple later realised they missed each other and decided to withdraw the divorce and continue their marriage.
A marriage in Bhopal came close to ending in divorce after a woman filed for separation over her husband’s loud snoring, which she said left her unable to sleep. The unusual case, which surfaced during family counseling, stood out because there were no allegations of abuse or broader marital conflict, only sleep disruption caused by the husband’s snoring.
The case was handled by senior family counselor Rita Tuli, who said the couple otherwise shared a stable relationship. After a period of counseling and a recommended separation experiment, the couple later decided to withdraw their divorce plans and continue their marriage. UP Woman Upset After Husband Turns Honeymoon Into Family Vacation, Marriage Hits Crisis As She Seeks Divorce.
A Marriage Strained by Sleepless Nights
According to the wife, her only grievance was persistent sleeplessness caused by her husband’s loud snoring. She repeatedly described him as "a very good person", and said there were no complaints regarding his behaviour or family.
Speaking during counseling, she said: "I cannot stay awake all night," she told the family counselor while seeking a divorce. Counselor Rita Tuli said the wife had no allegations of mental or physical harassment and that the issue was limited entirely to sleep disturbance. ‘Shaanti Se Baitho, Dete Raho INR 15,000, Khush Raho’: Supreme Court Refuses Divorce to Man Paying Maintenance for 16 Years.
"There were no allegations of mental or physical harassment. The wife clearly said she had no complaints against her husband or his family. Her only issue was that she couldn't sleep because of his loud snoring," Tuli said. Daily arguments reportedly began as the husband denied the snoring issue, further straining the couple’s relationship.
Counseling and an Unconventional Solution
As disagreements continued, the wife became convinced that divorce was the only solution. Instead of moving directly toward legal proceedings, the counselor suggested that the couple live separately for three months to reassess their decision. The approach aimed to help them distinguish between temporary irritation and deeper incompatibility.
Separation Leads to Realisation
After three months of living apart, the couple returned for a follow-up session with a change of perspective. They said the separation made them realise they missed each other and valued the relationship more than the nightly disturbance caused by snoring. Both confirmed that there had never been any form of physical or emotional abuse in the marriage.
Following counseling, the couple decided to withdraw their divorce plans and continue their married life. The case, while unusual, highlighted how seemingly minor issues can escalate in relationships when left unresolved, and how structured counseling interventions can help couples reassess emotional decisions.
