Reacting to the rescue, Sarma said on X, “Insaan ho ya jaanwar, Assam mein koi bhi peeda mein nahi rahega” (Whether human or animal, no one in Assam will remain in pain). He said the tyre posed a major challenge to the elephant’s life and that it was promptly removed.

The elephant had earlier been spotted in the Bokial forest block in the Morongi area. Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia had alerted senior forest officials after learning about the animal, following which a forest department team reached the area. Officials had monitored the elephant and assessed the safest way to remove the tyre, which was suspected to have come from a tractor. Wildlife experts had warned that the tyre could cause wounds, restrict movement and lead to other health complications. Sarma said the successful rescue not only saved the elephant’s life but also allowed it to rejoin its herd. Authorities had also appealed to residents to avoid approaching, chasing or disturbing the animal during the rescue operation.
