Guwahati, August 2: The flood situation in Assam has worsened, as three more people drowned today, with the death toll reaching 41. Over one lakh people have been affected by the floods. According to the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three persons died in Dhemaji, Udalguri and Golaghat districts of the state. Apart from these three districts Lakhimpur, Biswanath (flash floods), Barpeta, Sivasagar and Charaideoare also affected by flash floods and the rising waters of the Brahmaputra and four of its tributaries.

According to ASDMA, Over 5,000 hectares of agricultural land have also been affected. There were 99 relief camps and distribution centres set up by the district authorities in which over 21,000 people are staying. The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger mark in Jorhat, Sivasagar, town, Golaghat, Sonitpur and Barpeta.

According to The Hindu’s report, Eastern Assam’s Golaghat is the worst-affected district with 54,135 people displaced followed by Sivasagar (17,905) and Lakhimpur (14,052). There are reports of embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure being damaged in Lakhimpur, Kamrup metropolitan, Sivasagar and Sonitpur districts, ASDMA said. Last year, ASDMA, had run 954 relief camps providing shelter to a total of 4,51,846 people affected by the floods.
