Guwahati, December 12: The counting of votes for Assam Panchayat Elections 2018 started at 8 AM on Wednesday amid high security and continues to be underway on Thursday. The polling in the state was held in two phases. 82 percent voting was recorded in the two-phase elections across the north-eastern state. Reports inform that at least 734 candidates contesting in various seats were declared winners uncontested. Out of the winning candidates, 380 belong to the BJP, Congress has 193 winners and 28 from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

As per the latest trends, the BJP is leading on 3201 GP member seats while the Congress is ahead on 2146 and AGP on 453. In the Anchalik Parishad, BJP is leading on 672 seats while Congress is ahead on 387 seats. In the GP President election, BJP is ahead on 713 seats while Congress is on 389 seats. In Zila Parishad, BJP is leading on 150 seats while Congress is ahead on 65.

On Tuesday, re-polling was held at 53 polling stations which went to polls in the second phase. According to reports, all major political parties including BJP, Congress, Asom Gana Parishad, Bodoland Peoples Front, Left parties and AIUDF among others contested the elections.

The first phase of polling was held on December 5 in 16 districts of the state. Reports inform that a voter turnout was 81.5 per cent. The second phase of polling was held on December 9 and estimated 75 per cent of voters exercised their franchise. The second phase of panchayat polls was held in 10 districts of Assam. A few cases of anomalies regarding names of voters and candidates, symbols along with ballot papers were reported during the polls.

Elaborate arrangements are being made in the state to ensure error-free process. Moreover, CCTVs have been installed in counting halls to ensure transparency in the counting of votes. Over 78,000 candidates are in the fray for polls. A total of 82 per cent voting was recorded in the two-phase elections. Yesterday, re-polling was held at 53 polling stations which went to polls in the second phase.

Reports inform that in all, 1,512 candidates are contesting for the 420 Zila Parishad member seats, 7,004 candidates contesting for 2,199 Anchalik Panchayat member seats, 7,667 candidates are in the fray for 2,199 Gaon Panchayat president seats and 62,388 candidates vying for the 21,990 Gaon Panchayat ward member seats.
