Ayub's, Mumbai’s popular late-night eatery, has had its food licence suspended by the Maharashtra FDA after inspectors found eggs stored at room temperature, stagnant water, open drains and houseflies. The FDA also flagged poor segregation of raw and cooked food, inadequate pest control and hygiene facilities during an August 22 inspection.
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licence of Mumbai’s popular late-night eatery Ayub's after an inspection found multiple food safety violations, including improper storage of eggs, stagnant water, open drains and houseflies. The action was part of a wider statewide crackdown on food safety standards.
The FDA inspected 37 hotels, restaurants, dhabas and other food establishments on Monday, issuing improvement notices to 31 and suspending the licences of four establishments, the department said on Tuesday. Ayub's Licence Suspended After FDA Inspection
The FDA inspected Ayub's on August 22 based on information received by the department and under the guidance of Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. Officials found eggs and other high-risk food products stored at room temperature, along with inadequate temperature-control facilities.
The inspection also found that raw and cooked food was not properly segregated or stored separately. Food-handling areas were reported to be unhygienic. Officials found deficiencies in pest-control measures and inadequate personal hygiene facilities for food-handling workers. The department also found that necessary food testing was not being carried out and that records and systems related to food traceability were inadequate. According to the FDA, the combination of violations indicated serious gaps in the establishment's basic food safety controls.
Food Safety Risks Flagged By FDA
The FDA said the conditions could increase the risk of microbial contamination, cross-contamination between raw and cooked food and unsafe food reaching consumers.
The department specifically flagged the storage of eggs and other perishable food at room temperature. According to the FDA, failure to maintain appropriate temperatures can encourage microbial growth and increase the risk of food-borne illnesses.
Ayub's, which holds FSSAI licence number 11521001000585, had its food licence suspended from August 23 under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the applicable rules and regulations.
Three Other Establishments Face Suspension
The FDA also suspended the food licence of M/s Sankalp Mahila Audyogik Utpadak Sahakari Sanstha Maryadit at Wadia Estate, MN Road, in Kurla West, Mumbai, with immediate effect. The other establishments whose licences were suspended were M/s Burhampur Jalebi Center in Pratap Nagar, Nagpur, and M/s Step In Restaurant in Giripeth, Nagpur. The department said further legal and administrative action would be taken as per procedure.
FDA Seizes Food Products Worth Crores
As part of the wider crackdown, the FDA seized 55,996 kg of roasted arecanut worth INR 2.23 crore in Nagpur. Food products and other stock worth around INR 2.25 crore were also seized across Maharashtra over safety violations. The FDA said the inspections were aimed at checking compliance with food safety requirements and addressing violations at food establishments across the state.
Of the 37 establishments inspected during the drive, 31 were issued improvement notices, while four had their food licences suspended. The action against AYUB'S comes amid increased scrutiny of food safety practices at restaurants and other establishments, particularly where inadequate storage, sanitation and pest-control measures can create risks for consumers.
