Baba Siddique Murder Case: Why Has Mumbai Police Not Taken Anmol Bishnoi's Custody? Shehzeen Siddique Raises Questions
Shehzeen Siddique, widow of the late leader Baba Siddique, has petitioned a Mumbai court alleging that police are avoiding taking custody of Anmol Bishnoi due to external pressure. She claims this delay hampers the murder investigation, while the court has ordered prosecutors to respond to her plea regarding why custody has not been secured despite Bishnoi's 2025 deportation.
Shehzeen Siddique, the widow of late Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique, has moved a special court in Mumbai, alleging that the police are deliberately avoiding taking custody of Anmol Bishnoi - a key conspirator in her husband's 2024 murder - due to external pressure. Baba Siddique, 66, was shot dead by three assailants outside his son Zeeshan’s office in Mumbai's Bandra (East) on October 12, 2024. Following the investigation, the Mumbai Police named Anmol Bishnoi, the brother of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, as the "wanted main accused" and mastermind behind the operation.
Allegations of Procedural Delay
In an application filed before the special MCOCA court on Friday, July 3, Shehzeen Siddique, through her lawyers Pradip Gharat and Trivankumar Karnani, questioned why the Mumbai Crime Branch has failed to secure Anmol’s custody despite his deportation from the United States in November 2025. How Did Baba Siddique’s Death Impact Salman Khan? ‘Sikandar’ Actor Vishal Vashishtha Shares Heartbreaking Details.
The plea highlights that following his deportation, Anmol was placed in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with other cases and is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. The application contends that the Mumbai Police have remained inactive, "sitting with their hands tied," instead of moving the court to secure his custody for the murder trial.
Concerns Over Investigation and Transparency
The family has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the pace and direction of the investigation. According to the plea, the family's attempts to obtain information via Right to Information (RTI) applications regarding the steps taken to secure Anmol’s custody were rejected on grounds of confidentiality. "If the police take the custody of the accused Anmol Bishnoi, they will have to investigate his exact role and about the exact motive," the application stated. It further alleged that the prosecuting agency is "avoiding to take the custody of Accused Anmol Bishnoi" because his interrogation would likely expose the roles of individuals acting under "external pressures". Delhi: Mumbai Police Arrest Man for Trying To Reactivate Baba Siddique’s Mobile Phone Number for Cyber Fraud.
Current Status of the Trial
The special court, presiding over the murder case, has directed the Special Public Prosecutor, Mahesh Mule, to file a formal reply to the widow's plea. The matter is posted for further hearing on July 10. This legal development follows the formal framing of charges on February 10 against 27 other individuals accused of involvement in the murder. While the trial against these 27 suspects is underway, the Siddique family maintains that the absence of the "main culprit" from the ongoing proceedings will lead to a "multiplicity of proceedings" and hinder the pursuit of justice.
Beyond this application, Shehzeen Siddique has also reportedly approached the Bombay High Court through a separate writ petition, seeking a fair and comprehensive investigation to bring all individuals involved in the conspiracy to justice.
