Bengaluru, March 25: A 68-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her own family members in Bengaluru’s Kamakshipalya area following a dispute over money she had collected through alms. Local police have arrested the victim’s daughter, son-in-law, and grandson in connection with the homicide, which occurred late Tuesday evening. The victim, identified as Yellamma, succumbed to internal injuries after being repeatedly assaulted with a wooden club.

Dispute Over Alms Money

The fatal confrontation reportedly began when Yellamma’s daughter, 45-year-old Rathnamma, demanded a share of the money the elderly woman had collected while begging near a local temple. According to investigators, Yellamma had managed to save a small sum of money, which she refused to hand over to her daughter. Bengaluru Shocker: Man Brutally Murders Live-In Partner After Heated Argument, Attempts To Pass It Off As Suicide.

The disagreement escalated quickly, drawing in Rathnamma’s husband, Govindappa, and their son. Police officials stated that the trio allegedly attacked Yellamma, using a "long wooden reaper" to strike her across the head and torso. Neighbors who heard the commotion alerted the authorities, but Yellamma was declared dead by the time emergency responders arrived at the residence.

Investigation and Arrests

Following a preliminary investigation and a statement from a relative, the Kamakshipalya police registered a case of murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). All three family members were taken into custody Wednesday morning. Bengaluru Shocker: Woman Kills Live-In Partner With Friends’ Help After Forcing Him to Drink Alcohol and Repeatedly Stabbing; 3 Arrested.

"The primary motive appears to be a financial dispute over the meager earnings the victim had secured," a senior police officer involved in the case said. "The nature of the injuries suggests a sustained assault. We have recovered the weapon used in the crime and are currently recording the statements of the accused."

Background of the Family

Yellamma had been living with her daughter’s family for several years. Neighbors described the household as one frequently troubled by domestic discord, often centered on the family’s precarious financial situation. While Yellamma frequented local religious sites to seek alms, her son-in-law worked as a daily-wage laborer, and the family reportedly struggled to meet basic expenses.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination at Victoria Hospital to determine the exact cause of death. The three accused are expected to be produced before a local magistrate later this week as the investigation continues.

Rising Concerns Over Elder Abuse

This incident has reignited local discussions regarding the safety and vulnerability of the elderly living in impoverished conditions. Social workers in Bengaluru have noted that financial stress within families often manifests as physical abuse toward senior members who have little to no legal or social protection.

The police have urged citizens to report signs of domestic violence or elder neglect to the dedicated helpline (1090) to prevent such escalations in the future.
