Under the government notification issued on September 21, 2026, smartphone screen protectors have been added to the schedule of products covered by the compulsory registration order.

The specified standard is IS 19348:2025, titled “Glass Screen Protector — Specification.” The notification identifies this standard for screen protectors used with smartphones. The requirement has been introduced under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. BIS operates registration and conformity-assessment mechanisms for products covered by compulsory government requirements.

Rules to Take Effect From April 1, 2027

The new provisions will not take effect immediately. The notification specifically states that the requirements for smartphone screen protectors will apply from April 1, 2027. What Will Change for Tempered Glass Manufacturers?

Once the rules come into force, covered smartphone screen protectors will have to conform to IS 19348:2025 and meet the applicable BIS registration requirements. The change is significant for a market where screen protectors are sold in a wide range of prices and specifications. BIS says its registration scheme involves a manufacturer's declaration that the product conforms to the relevant Indian Standard, subject to the applicable regulatory framework.
