BMC Worker Falls Into Manhole in Front of Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, Video Surfaces
A BMC worker fell into an open manhole right in front of Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde during a monsoon inspection at a waterlogged King Circle. The worker was quickly rescued without serious injury. The incident, caught on camera, triggered intense political backlash over the city's infrastructure and drainage preparedness.
A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) employee fell into an open manhole right in front of Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde during an on-site inspection of rain-hit areas in King Circle on Wednesday, June 24. The incident occurred moments after the mayor had publicly assured residents that the city administration was fully prepared for monsoon waterlogging and that local drainage infrastructure was functioning properly. The dramatic moment was caught on camera and has quickly ignited political criticism over the city's seasonal preparedness. The worker, identified as a mukkadam (supervisor) from the BMC's F-North ward, was walking near the inspection team when he stepped into the open water channel, which had been hidden beneath waterlogged roads following heavy overnight downpours.
Police personnel and civic staffers immediately launched a rescue operation, pulling him out of the submerged drain within moments. Officials confirmed that the worker survived without sustaining serious injuries. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde Reprimands Officials After Worker Falls Into Open Manhole (Watch Video).

Incident Unfolds Mid-Inspection by Mayor Ritu Tawde
The accident took place at the Gandhi Market area near King Circle, an infamous low-lying pocket prone to chronic flooding. Mayor Tawde, along with senior BMC executives, was touring the site to evaluate the efficacy of local stormwater pumping operations after Mumbai was battered by more than 200 mm of rain within an eight-hour window. According to a statement from the mayor's office, the adjacent footpath and hazardous zones had already been sectioned off to prevent mishaps.
“There was an open manhole, and the footpath and the adjoining area were barricaded. The man tried to approach the footpath where the mayor was standing by removing the barricades and fell into the manhole," a spokesperson for the mayor's office stated.
Your Corruption Has Been Caught Red-Handed, Says Varsha Gaikwad

Political Backlash Over Infrastructure Failures
As footage of the plunge circulated across social media, opposition leaders capitalized on the mishap to question the ruling administration's accountability. Congress Member of Parliament Varsha Gaikwad issued a sharp public rebuke online, linking the worker's fall directly to municipal governance failures. “Madam Mayor, before telling protesters to come out onto the streets and work, take a look at the citizen who has fallen in a manhole right in front of you. The person has fallen into the hole because of your inaction and corruption. This is not an accident. But your corruption is being caught red handed,” Gaikwad stated.
Similarly, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar attributed the localized flooding to delayed desilting operations. "The city-wide waterlogging recorded on Wednesday is the direct result of incomplete desilting work," Pednekar said, urging the civic body to expedite remaining maintenance contracts.
Mayor Defends Civic Preparedness
Refuting allegations of municipal negligence, Mayor Tawde defended the BMC's proactive measures and challenged opposition members to engage on the ground rather than issue statements remotely. She reiterated that specialized dewatering pumps remained completely operational throughout the morning to clear major transit lanes. “Work doesn't get done by sitting at home. You have to get wet in the rain. You have to come out. You have to be on the road,” Tawde stated in response to the criticism. The flooding at Gandhi Market occurred just a day after the monsoon made a delayed arrival in Mumbai. To combat severe waterlogging in this specific pocket, the BMC had previously commissioned an underground mini-pumping station in 2022 at an estimated project cost of ₹19 crore. The specialized infrastructure is designed to pull excess water into an inlet chamber before directing it to nearby outflow channels.
Despite the operational machinery, high-intensity spells led to widespread inundation across several areas, including the Andheri subway and Hindmata, which temporarily slowed rail lines and disrupted vehicular movement. Emergency teams remain on high alert as municipal weather bureaus forecast continued heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
