A 55-year-old flyer was arrested by Mumbai Police after allegedly telling security staff that there was a “bomb in my bag” while boarding an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Delhi. The remark triggered security protocols, led to more than 100 passengers being deboarded and delayed the flight by about an hour on August 9, police said. The incident occurred on IndiGo flight 6E333, which was scheduled to depart Mumbai at 8 am for Delhi, according to a report.

According to a complaint filed by IndiGo assistant security manager Omprakash Rajbhar, airline staff were conducting routine hand-baggage checks and asking passengers about prohibited items, including lighters, scissors, nail cutters, liquids and sprays. IndiGo Flight 6E 723 Makes Emergency Landing at Chennai Airport After Engine Failure.

When asked whether his bag contained any such items, the passenger, identified as Anuj Jayaram Suvarna, allegedly replied that it contained a bomb. The remark was immediately treated as a potential security threat. Senior airline officials and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) were informed, following which Suvarna was taken for questioning and handed over to the police.

More Than 100 Passengers Deboarded

Following the alert, IndiGo deboarded more than 100 passengers and removed Suvarna's two bags from the aircraft. Security personnel subsequently conducted checks of the aircraft and baggage. After the security clearance, the Mumbai-Delhi flight departed at around 9 am, approximately one hour after its scheduled departure. Suvarna was not allowed to continue on the flight. IndiGo Launches Over 30 New Routes From Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Flyer Arrested, Later Released on Bail

Mumbai Police registered an FIR against Suvarna under Sections 125 and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 125 relates to acts endangering human life or personal safety, while Section 351(2) concerns criminal intimidation. Deputy Commissioner of Police Nimit Goyal said the passenger told investigators that he had made the bomb remark as a joke. Suvarna was subsequently released on bail. IndiGo classified him as an unruly passenger, and police said he may be blacklisted by the airline.

Incident During Heightened Airport Security

The incident took place amid heightened security arrangements at major Indian airports ahead of Independence Day. According to the report, stricter security checks were expected to remain in place at several key airports until around August 20. The incident highlights the security and operational consequences of making bomb-related remarks at airports, even when the person making the statement later claims it was intended as a joke.
