Bull Rescue Turns Fatal: 3 Family Members Die After Inhaling Toxic Gas Inside 40-Foot Well in Madhya Pradesh

Three members of the same family died of suffocation and another was left in critical condition after inhaling toxic gases while attempting to rescue a bull from a 40-foot-deep well in Madhya Pradesh’s Maihar district, local police confirmed on Saturday. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM on Friday in the Ahiran Tola area of Kharamseda village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Amarpatan police station.

According to Amarpatan police station in-charge Vijay Singh Parste, a bull had accidentally fallen into a deep well owned by a local resident, Ramnivas Kushwaha. In an effort to save the animal, four villagers descended into the structure one after another using a rope. However, upon reaching the bottom, they quickly lost consciousness due to a severe lack of oxygen and the immediate impact of toxic fumes. Nearby villagers rushed to the scene and managed to pull the four unconscious men out of the well. They were immediately transported to a local community health centre, where doctors declared three of them dead on arrival. The deceased have been identified as Rahul Yadav, 36, Virendra Yadav, 40, and Krishnadutt Yadav, 26. The fourth individual, identified as 50-year-old Ramchandra Yadav, survived the initial exposure but remains in critical condition. Due to the severity of his condition, medical authorities referred him to the Satna District Hospital for specialized care. Preliminary police investigations indicate that the well was low on water but contained a significant accumulation of garbage and decomposing organic matter. Officials noted that old, unventilated wells frequently accumulate lethal levels of gases such as methane and carbon dioxide, which can cause rapid asphyxiation to anyone who enters. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for a post-mortem examination, and local authorities have registered a case to conduct further inquiries into the tragedy.
