Pune’s historic Burger King outlet in Camp has been sealed and its food licence suspended after a Maharashtra FDA inspection found serious hygiene and food-safety violations. The action is part of a wider statewide crackdown in which 86 establishments were inspected, 60 improvement notices issued and 14 food-business licences suspended, including facilities operated by Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart.
Pune’s historic Burger King outlet on East Street in the Camp area has been sealed and its food licence suspended after the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found serious hygiene deficiencies and violations of food-safety regulations. The action against the outlet, which has reportedly operated at the location since 1992, is part of a wider statewide food-safety crackdown by the FDA.
The action was taken under the “Safe Food, Safe Drug, Safe Maharashtra” campaign, launched under the directions of Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. The latest inspections have extended beyond restaurants to quick-commerce warehouses and other food businesses, with the FDA issuing notices, suspending licences and ordering establishments to halt operations over compliance concerns. The FDA has warned that violations of food-safety requirements can result in improvement notices, licence suspension and orders to halt operations.
Quick-Commerce Facilities Face Action
Quick-commerce operators were among the establishments flagged during the inspections, with officials reporting problems involving storage, temperature control and pest management.
At one facility, cockroaches were reportedly found nesting and moving on racks used to store food packets. Inspections at other facilities found inadequate temperature control for perishable food, poor warehouse layouts and improper segregation of food, non-food items and hazardous substances.
The Ghatkopar Blinkit Commerce Private Limited facility reportedly scored 34 out of 74 marks, or 46 per cent, during inspection and was declared non-compliant.
At Zepto’s Lokhandwala facility, inspectors reported inadequate temperature control for perishable food, the absence of an ante-room for frozen products, poor warehouse layout and improper segregation. The facility scored 65 out of 140 marks, or 47 per cent, and was also declared non-compliant.
The action comes as Maharashtra authorities increase scrutiny of the rapidly expanding quick-commerce sector. Reuters reported that the FDA suspended operating permits for 12 warehouses linked to major quick-commerce and delivery businesses over hygiene violations during the wider crackdown.
Milk Products and Other Food Items Seized
The statewide drive also resulted in the seizure of food products. The FDA seized 698 kg of milk products valued at INR 34,302. Officials also seized another 1,270 kg of food items, including milk products, bakery products and edible oil, valued at approximately INR 1.29 lakh.
In a separate operation targeting banned gutkha and pan masala, authorities registered 10 FIRs relating to their sale, distribution and transportation. Nine people were arrested and banned products worth INR 46.76 lakh were seized. The total value of seized goods was reported at INR 46,89,603.
The food-safety department also inspected 109 hotels, restaurants and dhabas during the special drive. Of these, 49 establishments received improvement notices, while the licences of four establishments were suspended.
The Pune division conducted a separate inspection drive between August 11 and August 14 covering hotels, restaurants, e-commerce establishments and dairies. The FDA said licences or registrations of 16 establishments were immediately suspended after significant hygiene deficiencies and violations of food-safety norms were detected.
The establishments named in reports include Fortune Enterprises at Hotel Sayaji in Lonavala, Hotel Chul Mutton in Lohegaon, Simply South in Bhosari, Hotel Pawan in Kolhapur, Rajesh Chinese in Sangli, and Domino’s Pizza and Pizza Hut outlets in Karad. JBM Hospitality’s canteen at HDFC Bank in Wanwadi, Pune, was ordered to stop operations for allegedly functioning without a licence.
Burger King Action Part of Wider Pune Crackdown
The Camp Burger King action is among several measures taken against food establishments in the Pune division. The FDA’s four-day inspection drive resulted in licence suspensions involving restaurants, hotels, food businesses and online-commerce facilities.
The action against other prominent food outlets reflects the broader scope of the campaign. Reuters reported separately that Maharashtra authorities shut four Domino’s outlets and one Pizza Hut outlet after inspections found serious hygiene violations, including grease residue, insect infestations and missing expiry information on food products.
For the Camp Burger King outlet, the immediate consequence is the suspension of its food licence and sealing of the premises. Any reopening would depend on compliance with the applicable food-safety requirements and further regulatory action by the FDA.
The Maharashtra FDA’s latest campaign signals a more stringent approach to enforcement across restaurants, food businesses and quick-commerce facilities, with licence suspension being used where inspectors identify significant hygiene or food-safety violations.
