A severe cloudburst near the under-construction 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Project in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district triggered flash floods and heavy mudslides late Sunday night, burying multiple construction vehicles and cutting off critical road connectivity.
Flash floods and mudslides triggered by intense overnight rainfall have severely damaged the Doda-Kishtwar National Highway (NH-244), leading to a complete halt in vehicular movement. The sudden influx of water and debris has left numerous vehicles stranded and partially buried near the under-construction 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Power Project. Despite the significant damage to property and infrastructure, district officials have confirmed that no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
The flash flood carried large volumes of mud, heavy boulders, and debris onto a critical stretch of the highway, making it entirely unsafe for commuters. At Prem Nagar, several vehicles parked along the roadside were quickly trapped under the rising debris. Local authorities responded immediately by suspending all traffic along the affected route. Simultaneously, the under-construction Kwar Hydroelectric Project site, located on the Chenab River, bore the brunt of a major mudslide. Torrents of mud and rock swept directly into the project's tunnel area, submerging heavy construction equipment, including trucks, bulldozers, and dozers. Essential building materials stored at the site also sustained extensive damage.
The Kishtwar district administration, alongside the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), has deployed emergency response teams and heavy machinery to clear the blockages. Teams are working continuously to remove the thick mud, retrieve the trapped vehicles, and restore basic connectivity to the region.
This incident follows a comprehensive weather advisory previously issued by the Jammu and Kashmir administration warning of heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and potential landslides across vulnerable hill districts.
