A severe cloudburst struck the high-altitude Tulail Valley in the Gurez region of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district today, triggering sudden flash floods that heavily damaged local infrastructure and cut off remote villages. The intense deluge sent a rapid influx of water and debris down local rivulets, causing a steep rise in the water levels of the nearby Kishanganga river channel.
The subsequent flash floods washed out a critical section of the Kilshay–Zadigai road. The destruction of this thoroughfare has temporarily halted vehicular movement, disconnecting several border villages from the main sub-divisional headquarters in Gurez. According to local administrative officials, the sudden surge of water and muck created momentary panic among residents in the low-lying areas of the valley. Several families briefly sought safety on higher ground as the torrent swept down the mountainous terrain. Kiren Rijiju Meets Flood-affected Families in Arunachal Pradesh, Assures Help.
Local emergency response teams, along with personnel from the sub-divisional administration, have been deployed to the affected area to monitor the situation. Initial assessments indicate that while the floodwaters caused structural damage to the road link and minor disruptions to surrounding land, no casualties or significant injuries have been reported. The Tulail Valley, located near the Line of Control (LoC), is highly susceptible to localized extreme weather events due to its rugged geography and high altitude. The region relies heavily on a limited network of mountain roads, making infrastructure damage particularly challenging for remote communities. What Is a Cloudburst? How Does It Occur?
