CNG Price Hike: Delhi-NCR Rates Increase by INR 3.89 per Kg, IGL Blames West Asia Crisis
CNG prices in Delhi-NCR have risen by INR 3.89 per kg, taking the retail rate to INR 86.98 a kg, IGL announced on Friday night. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices in Delhi-NCR have gone up by INR 3.89 per kg, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) announced on Friday night, pushing the retail rate to INR 86.98 a kg with effect from today. The public sector unit, which supplies CNG largely used in autos, cabs, buses, and economy-focused personal cars across the National Capital Region, attributed the hike to sustained pressure on international liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices, saying the "cost impact becoming increasingly significant" had made a revision unavoidable to keep supplies stable.
IGL Cites Global LNG Cost Pressure
In its statement, IGL said, "a calibrated revision of INR 3.89 per kg has now become necessary to partially offset the increase in input gas cost while ensuring continuity and reliability of CNG supplies." The company maintained that despite the increase, CNG in Delhi remains among the cheaper fuel options available to consumers. "CNG consumers (private cars, auto and taxi, public transport users and other price-sensitive sections of society) are largely being insulated from the impact of volatile increases in imported spot LNG prices," IGL said.
West Asia Crisis And Hormuz Disruption Named As Key Factor
IGL specifically flagged the "re-escalation of West Asia crisis," a reference to the US war on Iran, and its impact on cargo movement through the Strait of Hormuz as a major driver of the price pressure. The company said global LNG prices have nearly doubled compared to pre-crisis levels. Rising Domestic Demand Adds To Input Cost Burden
IGL noted that CNG consumption in India has been climbing sharply in step with the country's economic growth, forcing a greater reliance on imported spot LNG to meet demand. "In order to meet this rising demand for CNG, a significant portion of input gas for the CNG segment is being met through imported Spot LNG," the company said, adding that this combination of factors "resulted in a considerable increase in input gas cost for CNG segment."
IGL also pointed out that Delhi's CNG retail price had stayed "more or less stable during the Hormuz crisis" even as international gas price benchmarks climbed sharply over the same period.
