A 52-year-old Congress worker died from severe burn injuries while being transported to Hyderabad for emergency medical treatment on Sunday, after allegedly being doused in petrol and set on fire by a fellow party worker the previous night. The victim, identified as A Mahesh, a senior party worker with 26 years of service, was attacked near the Kotilingala temple on the outskirts of Warangal around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

According to the Geesugonda police, Mahesh had been invited to an isolated location for a gathering by another Congress worker, Jannu Madhu. They were joined by Pathri Kumar, who is also a Congress worker, and one other individual. An argument broke out during the meeting when Kumar, a known history-sheeter, accused Mahesh of reporting his activities to Wardhannapet MLA KR Nagaraju. The confrontation escalated when Kumar forcibly confiscated Mahesh’s mobile phone, poured petrol over him, and set him ablaze. Passersby and local residents rushed to help Mahesh and managed to extinguish the flames. While waiting for emergency services, locals recorded a video statement from Mahesh on their mobile phones at his request. In the video, Mahesh named Kumar as the primary attacker and urged authorities to take strict legal action. He stated that he had worked extensively for the party's development but alleged that individuals like Kumar were conspiring against senior workers. Mahesh also appealed to the government to support his family.

Mahesh was initially rushed by the Geesugonda police to the MGM Hospital in Warangal. Doctors noted he had sustained 50% burns and advised an immediate transfer to a specialized facility in Hyderabad. However, he succumbed to his injuries during the transit. Police records indicate that the prime suspect, Pathri Kumar, was previously convicted in a 2018 murder case and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2021, alongside four others. He had recently been released on conditional bail by the High Court four months ago after spending nearly 11 months in prison, subsequently resuming political activities alongside Mahesh.
