Cyclone Arnab Makes Landfall Along Andhra Coast

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Arnab crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between 2 am and 8 am on Wednesday as a very severe cyclonic storm. The system crossed the coast southwest of Yanam, approximately 20 km east-northeast of Narsapur, 40 km southwest of Yanam and 60 km southwest of Kakinada. It had maximum sustained wind speeds of 125–135 kmph, with gusts reaching 150 kmph.

After landfall, the cyclone weakened into a severe cyclonic storm. The IMD forecast that it would continue moving north-northwestwards and weaken gradually over the following hours. The weather department also forecast isolated heavy rainfall in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Parvathipuram Manyam districts on Thursday, October 29. 3 Dead, 55,000 Eveacuated in Andhra Pradesh Because of Cyclone Arnab: NDRF.

Coastal Districts Report Tree Fall, Road Damage and Power Outages

Konaseema was among the worst-affected districts, with winds reaching up to 130 kmph. Trees and electric poles were uprooted, roads were blocked, and paddy and horticultural crops sustained damage. In Kakinada district, preliminary assessments indicated that hundreds of trees and around 100 electric poles had been uprooted. The Uppada coastal road was completely washed away, while prolonged electricity outages caused difficulties for residents in Kakinada and Konaseema.

Visakhapatnam city also recorded extensive damage, with hundreds of trees uprooted and low-lying areas experiencing waterlogging after heavy rainfall. Municipal and Roads and Buildings Department teams were deployed to clear roads and restore access. Officials expected major highways to be cleared and electricity connections to be restored in affected areas as conditions improved. However, the extent of crop and infrastructure damage remained under assessment.

More Than 20,000 People Evacuated Before Cyclone

Authorities evacuated more than 20,000 people from vulnerable coastal areas before the cyclone made landfall. Relief centres and cyclone shelters were established to accommodate residents from low-lying areas. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu sought assistance from the Union government, briefing Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the cyclone’s impact on the state.

Naidu also reviewed relief and restoration efforts, directing officials to clear roads blocked by fallen trees, restore electricity when weather conditions permitted, and ensure that cyclone shelters had sufficient food, drinking water and medical facilities. Officials were also instructed to assess agricultural losses and take measures to prevent flooding in fields and damage to tanks and canals. Disaster response teams remained on standby to assist with relief operations.

Heavy Rainfall Recorded Across Coastal Andhra Pradesh

The cyclone brought exceptionally heavy rainfall to several districts. According to the IMD figures reported on Wednesday, Garividi in Vizianagaram district recorded approximately 26 cm of rain between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning. Several other locations in Anakapalli, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts received around 20–25 cm of rainfall during the same period.

The combination of heavy rain and powerful winds caused widespread disruption to transport, electricity supply and communications. Residents in affected areas faced difficulties due to fallen trees, damaged roads and prolonged power cuts. With further rainfall forecast in parts of northern Andhra Pradesh, authorities continued monitoring weather conditions and carrying out restoration work.
