The Union government is yet to announce the Dearness Allowance (DA) hike for July 2026, leaving over 50 lakh central government employees and around 65 lakh pensioners waiting for the revised rate. The revision is effective from July 1, 2026, but the Cabinet meeting on October 14 cleared a 78-day Productivity Linked Bonus for railway staff and did not take up the DA item. As of October 21, no official order has been issued, and the current DA stays at 60 per cent of basic pay.

Dearness Allowance is paid to offset the impact of inflation on household expenses. The Centre revises it twice a year, from January 1 and July 1, though the July instalment is usually cleared only between September and October.

What Is The Current DA Rate?

In April 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a 2 percentage point hike, taking DA and Dearness Relief (DR) from 58 per cent to 60 per cent, effective January 1, 2026. That remains the rate in force.

How Much Could The Hike Be?

Most projections point to a 3 percentage point rise, taking DA to 63 per cent, based on AICPI-IW data. Depending on the final decision, the rate could move to 61, 62 or 63 per cent. Any figure remains an estimate until the Cabinet clears it and the Department of Expenditure issues its order.

How Is DA Calculated?

Under the 7th Central Pay Commission formula, DA is calculated only on basic pay. HRA and transport allowance are not included.

DA Amount = Basic Pay x (DA Rate / 100)

For example, an employee with basic pay of INR 18,000 gets INR 10,800 a month at 60 per cent. At 63 per cent, that becomes INR 11,340.

Estimated Monthly Gain

Basic Pay (INR) DA At 60% DA At 61% (+1%) DA At 62% (+2%) DA At 63% (+3%)
18,000 10,800 10,980 (+180) 11,160 (+360) 11,340 (+540)
25,000 15,000 15,250 (+250) 15,500 (+500) 15,750 (+750)
35,000 21,000 21,350 (+350) 21,700 (+700) 22,050 (+1,050)
50,000 30,000 30,500 (+500) 31,000 (+1,000) 31,500 (+1,500)

These are gross figures for the DA component alone. Take-home pay will vary after deductions such as pension contribution and income tax.

Arrears And Pensioners

Once the hike is notified, it will apply retrospectively from July 1, 2026. Employees will get arrears for the intervening months, usually along with the revised salary. At a 3 per cent hike, an employee with basic pay of INR 18,000 would gain INR 540 per month, or INR 1,620 for July to September alone.

Pensioners will get the same increase in Dearness Relief (DR) through a separate order from the Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare.

What Next?

The process needs a Cabinet approval first, followed by an Office Memorandum from the Ministry of Finance. The ongoing work of the 8th Pay Commission does not affect this revision.
