Delhi, October 29: The air quality in the city has worsened after Diwali. According to Air Quality Index (AQI) data, the major pollutants PM 2.5 at 376 (very poor) and PM 10 at 278 (poor) has been recorded in Lodhi Road area. Infact on the Diwali night, many areas in the city recorded an AQI of 999, beyond which reading is not possible, on Diwali night. The prescribed limit is 60.

The toxic fumes were added to the environment as people celebrated Diwali by bursting crackers. In addition to this, stubble burning in the neighbouring states of Haryana, Punjab and other places further deteriorated the quality and added to the air pollution. According to an India Today report, around 11 pm on Sunday, AQI in areas such as RK Puram, Patparganj, Satyawati College and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium hit the maximum level of 999, which is 16 times more than the prescribed limit.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 is ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 falls in the bracket of ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 are considered as ‘severe’.
