The restrictions come as demonstrations entered their 34th day, with talks between the Centre and the protest organisers remaining deadlocked.
Authorities have also imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah's residence, restricting large gatherings. Internet Restrictions and Security Measures
The suspension of mobile internet around Jantar Mantar comes amid heightened security in central Delhi. Police also imposed Section 163 outside Amit Shah's residence and issued warnings in the area as a precautionary measure. The restrictions follow days of protests over alleged examination irregularities and demands raised by the CJP.
Connaught Place Businesses Close Early
The ongoing protest also affected commercial activity in the capital. All shops and restaurants in Connaught Place closed after 6.30 pm following an advisory issued by the New Delhi Traders Association. After Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal shared the traders' advisory on X and questioned whether authorities were preparing for action at Jantar Mantar, Delhi Police issued a clarification.
The police said: "There is no plan of Delhi Police to crack down on the ongoing protest tonight as is being conveyed. You are advised to refrain from spreading or circulating any misleading or unverified information."
Talks between the Centre and the CJP have remained stalled despite repeated outreach. According to the government, it has reached out four times without receiving a response. Union Minister Jitendra Singh, after meeting Home Minister Amit Shah, said: "The government's doors are open always for talks with students."
He added that protesters were welcome to meet at BJP president J.P. Nadda's residence or office. However, the CJP has maintained that discussions should take place at "a neutral place near Jantar Mantar."
The current round of demonstrations intensified after tens of thousands of protesters attempted to march towards Parliament during the Monsoon Session, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak.
Earlier, CJP spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka met Union Minister J.P. Nadda and submitted a letter outlining the organisation's demands. Nadda described the meeting as "cordial", while stating that the proposal for talks had come from the protesters.
The protests also witnessed clashes between demonstrators and Delhi Police, during which tear gas and batons were used. Several protesters and police personnel were reportedly injured.
The agitation gained further momentum after activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken to hospital by police during his protest. Meanwhile, opposition MPs and leaders of the INDIA alliance gathered at Gandhi Smriti after a meeting to discuss the handling of the protests.
