Delhi: Dead Lizard Found in Government School Mid-Day Meal, FIR Filed
A dead lizard was allegedly found in the mid-day meal served to students at a government school in Delhi's Hari Nagar, prompting police to register an FIR against unknown persons. A dead lizard was allegedly found in the mid-day meal served to students at a government school in west Delhi's Hari Nagar, following which police registered a case against unknown persons for endangering life, officials said. The incident was reported on Friday, and no students were reported ill after consuming the food.
The FIR was registered based on a complaint filed by the school's mid-day meal in-charge. According to the complaint, the meal, consisting of rice and chana dal, was supplied by an NGO and arrived at the school in four sealed containers before distribution. Dead Lizard Found During Meal Distribution in Delhi
According to the FIR, the food containers reached the school around 9 am on July 3 and were kept in a covered and hygienic area as per routine procedure. The containers were later checked in the presence of the deputy director of education (DDE) Zone-14 and DDE District West-A, who were visiting the school for an annual zonal meeting related to sports and cultural activities and a plantation drive.
The complaint stated: “The food was checked and tasted in front of the officials and the school’s mid-day meal committee members. Thereafter, it was distributed to the students during recess. After two-three distributions, a helper reported a dead lizard in one of the containers and the distribution was immediately stopped.” The school authorities immediately halted the distribution after the discovery. Food Samples and Lizard Sent for Examination
The mid-day meal in-charge informed the NGO representatives and distributors about the incident, according to the complaint. Officials said no adverse health incident linked to consumption of the meal had been reported at the time the complaint was filed.
A police team reached the school after receiving information about the incident. A police officer said the dead lizard was found inside a pink tiffin box. “The team found the dead lizard in a pink tiffin box. The area was secured, photographed and videographed. The food sample and the dead lizard were collected in two sealed plastic containers and sent to the police station’s evidence store room.” The samples have been preserved as part of the investigation.
Police Register Case, Probe Underway
Police registered a case under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with acts endangering life or personal safety of others, at Hari Nagar police station.
The case was filed against unknown persons on the same day, and further investigation is underway to determine how the contamination occurred and whether any negligence was involved.
