Delhi High Court Suspends Commercial Court Judge Veena Rani Following Vigilance Inquiry
The Delhi High Court has suspended commercial court judge Veena Rani following a full court meeting on July 10, shortly after suspending judge Vinay Singhal. While official reasons remain undisclosed, both actions followed vigilance inquiries. Judge Rani is prohibited from leaving Delhi and must report to the Saket Courts during her suspension.
The Delhi High Court has suspended district judge Veena Rani, who presided over the commercial court, following a full court meeting held on July 10. The suspension is the second such disciplinary action taken by the High Court in quick succession, coming shortly after the suspension of district judge Vinay Singhal. While the specific allegations that triggered the inquiry into Rani’s conduct remain undisclosed, officials confirmed the action followed a vigilance inquiry ordered by Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Formal Suspension and Terms
The decision regarding Rani was formally communicated on July 15 via a resolution issued by Registrar General Arun Bhardwaj. The resolution stated that disciplinary proceedings against the judge are currently contemplated. Rajpal Yadav Sentenced to 3 Months in Jail as Delhi High Court Upholds Cheque Bounce Conviction.
“Whereas a disciplinary proceeding against Ms. Veena Rani, an officer of Delhi Higher Judicial Service is comtemplated. Now, therefore, this Court in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (a) of sub-rule (1) of Rule 3 of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969 read with Rule 27 of Delhi Higher Judicial Service Rules, 1970, hereby places the said Ms. Veena Rani under suspension with immediate effect,” the resolution stated.
Under the terms of the suspension, Rani is required to report to the office of the Principal District and Sessions Judge (Headquarters) at Saket Courts in Delhi. The order further stipulates that the judge is prohibited from leaving Delhi without explicit permission from the competent authority.
Context of Recent Disciplinary Actions
This suspension follows the recent action taken against District Judge Vinay Singhal. Reports indicate that Singhal’s suspension was linked to allegations involving the appointment of ineligible advocates as court auctioneers. He is alleged to have passed judicial orders that allowed these individuals to receive payments exceeding the limits permitted under relevant rules. These developments highlight an ongoing trend of the Delhi High Court exercising its disciplinary jurisdiction over members of the subordinate judiciary. Last year, the High Court suspended district judge Sanjeev Kumar Singh and initiated disciplinary proceedings against another judicial officer, Anil Kumar, following a vigilance inquiry into allegations of judicial misconduct stemming from a complaint filed by a lawyer. As of Friday, the specific findings of the vigilance inquiry that led to Judge Rani's suspension have not been made public.
