Incessant overnight rainfall has brought the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) to a near-standstill today, triggering widespread waterlogging and severe traffic gridlocks during the morning rush hour. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for the national capital, warning of continued moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The downpour has overwhelmed municipal drainage networks, partially submerging vehicles and severely disrupting normal life across the metropolitan region.

Major Transit Corridors Blocked by Floodwaters

Transit across the city faced major bottlenecks as key roads turned into waterlogged stretches. The Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road emerged as one of the worst-affected zones, resulting in a total blockade of vehicular movement. Visuals from the area showed cars and two-wheelers navigating deep water, with local commuters raising safety concerns over hidden potholes beneath the surface. Significant water accumulation was also reported on National Highway 24 (NH-24) near the Ghazipur and Akshardham temple areas. The inundation heavily hampered traffic flow on this crucial arterial route connecting Delhi with Uttar Pradesh. Personnel from the local traffic police and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have been deployed to actively drain the water and manage the gridlock.

Sequential Tree Collapses in East of Kailash

In South Delhi’s East of Kailash neighborhood, Raja Dhir Singh Marg witnessed the collapse of two massive trees late last night. This marks the second consecutive day of such incidents on the exact same stretch. The uprooted giants fell within 600 meters of each other—one adjacent to the ISKCON Temple and the other near the National Heart Institute.

While one vehicle was trapped beneath the heavy debris, emergency officials confirmed that no injuries were reported despite the typically high pedestrian traffic near the hospital. The incident follows a similar occurrence on Tuesday when a falling tree crushed two luxury cars on the same roadway. Teams have been working to clear the fallen trunks and restore regular traffic flow. Delhi Weather Forecast & Update for Today, Thursday, 09 July 2026: Expect Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms, High of 29°C.

Delhi-NCR Hit by Rain Fury

Civic Disruption Across Satellite Cities

The administrative and infrastructural challenges extended deep into neighboring NCR cities. In Noida, residents of Sector 75 woke up to heavily submerged interior roads, making early morning travel nearly impossible. Meanwhile, parts of Ghaziabad—specifically Indirapuram and Abhay Khand—faced acute flooding, forcing pedestrians to wade through knee-deep water.

Official weather stations recorded substantial rainfall metrics over a 24-hour window, with Safdarjung recording 72.6 mm and Lodhi Road registering 80.2 mm. Although the persistent rain has brought regional temperatures well below normal seasonal averages, the accompanying infrastructure failures have led to widespread public frustration over recurring civic drainage inefficiencies during the monsoon season.
