Jammu, January 11: Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir were placed on high alert today evening, January 11, following a series of suspected drone incursions from Pakistan. At least five separate aerial objects were detected hovering over forward areas in the Samba, Rajouri, and Poonch districts. The sightings, which occurred near the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC), prompted immediate defensive action and extensive ground search operations by the Indian Army and local police.
Coordinated Sightings and Defensive Fire
The aerial activity began early Sunday evening, with flying objects entering Indian airspace and retreating back towards Pakistan after several minutes. Pakistan: Hindu Community Ends Sit-in After Police Assure Action in Killing of Farmer Kailash Kohli in Badin.
In the Nowshera sector of Rajouri, Army troops guarding the LoC opened fire with medium and light machine guns around 6:35 PM after spotting a drone over Gania-Kalsian village. Simultaneously, another drone with a blinking light was observed near Khabbar village in Teryath, appearing to move from Dharmsal towards Bharakh.
Further incursions were reported in other sectors:
Samba: A drone was seen hovering over Chak Babral village in the Ramgarh sector at approximately 7:15 PM.
Poonch: Security personnel tracked a flying object moving from Tain toward Topa in the Mankote sector at 6:25 PM.
Massive Search Operations Launched
Following the sightings, joint search teams involving the Army, Border Security Force (BSF), and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the J&K Police launched coordinated sweeps across the affected border belts.
The primary objective of these operations is to locate any potential "drone drops" - a tactic frequently used to smuggle weapons, narcotics, or currency into Indian territory. Officials noted that while the drones returned to the Pakistani side, the possibility of payloads being released in forested or forward residential areas remains a concern. ‘I’ve Saved Tens of Millions of Lives’: US President Donald Trump Reiterates Claim on Nobel Peace Prize for Stopping Multiple Major Wars, Including India-Pakistan Conflict (Watch Video).
Rising Drone Threats and Recent Seizures
The latest wave of incursions comes just 48 hours after security forces successfully intercepted an arms consignment in the Samba district. On Friday night, a joint BSF and police team recovered a packet in Paloora village, Ghagwal, wrapped in yellow tape.
The seized cache included:
- Two pistols (including one Glock and one Star pistol)
- Three magazines and 16 rounds of ammunition
- One hand grenade
Security agencies believe these intensified drone activities are part of a broader attempt to disrupt the upcoming Republic Day celebrations later this month. Surveillance has been significantly tightened along the 200-kilometre International Border and the LoC to counter the growing use of low-cost aerial technology for cross-border smuggling and infiltration attempts.
