Gujarat Woman Tied to Tree, Gang-Raped in ‘Purification’ Ritual Over Relationship With Another Man

Police have arrested nine people, including the woman’s husband and two women, in connection with the case. The incident came to light after videos purportedly showing the assault surfaced and circulated on social media. Woman Allegedly Confined and Assaulted
According to police disclosures cited in reports, the woman had left her husband and moved in with another man. Her husband and relatives allegedly traced the couple and took them to a house in Surendranagar, claiming that a purification ritual would be performed. The woman was allegedly confined and assaulted. Reports said she was tied to a tree during the ordeal, while the man accompanying her was also subjected to physical abuse and humiliation. Alleged S*xual Assault Recorded on Video
Police said the alleged assault was recorded on mobile phones and the footage was later circulated online. The videos reportedly showed the woman being subjected to severe abuse during the purported ritual. According to reports, the man who was living with the woman was allegedly forced to perform sexual acts with her. Other reports have also detailed further humiliation of the couple during the incident.
Viral Videos Alerted Police
The case reportedly came to the attention of police after a community member alerted authorities about the videos and the woman’s alleged ordeal. Surendranagar Superintendent of Police Premsukh Delu said police teams were deployed to locate the woman. Officers eventually traced her and brought her to the police station, where she narrated her ordeal after counselling.
Nine Arrested, Probe Underway
Police have arrested nine accused in the case, with two women among those held. Authorities are also investigating the roles of those who allegedly recorded and circulated the videos online. The accused have been booked under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions relating to gang rape, causing hurt, wrongful confinement and acts committed by several people with a common intention. Relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act have also been invoked. The investigation is continuing to establish the individual roles of the accused and determine how the videos were recorded and disseminated.
