A 25-year-old woman was murdered at her residence in Guwahati's Basisthapur area, with her severed head found stored in a polythene bag inside a refrigerator, officials said on Monday, September 7. The victim, identified as Riya Talukdar Goswami, was found dead after police broke into the apartment following complaints from neighbors about a foul smell emanating from the locked flat. The prime accused, her husband Ramanujan Goswami, has surrendered before the police and confessed to the crime.
Investigators described the killing as extremely brutal, noting that the victim's head was severed and her fingers were half-chopped, news agency ANI reported. The police recovered the victim's body on Sunday night and seized a sharp weapon from the premises suspected to have been used in the commission of the crime. The incident came to light on September 6 after neighbors reported a foul smell to the local police. Residents told investigators that they had not seen the couple for two days and that both of their mobile phones were switched off. Upon breaking the lock of the flat, officers found the partially decomposed body lying on the floor, while a search of the residence led to the discovery of her severed head inside the refrigerator.
Guwahati Police's Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP East), Anurag Sharma, confirmed that Ramanujan Goswami surrendered before the police and admitted his involvement. "The prime accused in the incident, Riya's husband, Ramanujan Goswami, has surrendered before the police and confessed to the crime," Sharma stated.
Riya and Ramanujan had entered into a love marriage around six months ago and were residing together in the Basisthapur flat.
