The protests against the citizenship law erupted across West Bengal last week, when the Centre passed the CAA which mandates the naturalisation of non-Muslim refugees. The law, combined with the proposed nationwide implementation of National Register of Citizenship (NRC) exercise, is being considered as a ploy by Muslim groups to strip a section of the community of their citizenship.

In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed the protesters to maintain calm and exercise restraint. Resorting to violence would hinder their cause, Mamata had warned.

The Trinamool Congress government, she said, would "at no cost" allow the CAA-NRC project be executed in her state. "Till my last breath, I will not allow NRC and CAA to be implemented in Bengal. My government will not allow them to divide the people on communal lines," she said at a protest march in Kolkata on Monday.
