Hyderabad, December 29: A three-year-old girl sustained severe facial injuries on Monday, December 29, after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs in the Attapur area of Hyderabad. The toddler, identified as Nityashri, required 18 stitches to her face following the dog attack, which occurred while she was playing outside her residence in Vasudev Reddy Nagar Colony. The incident has sparked a wave of anger among residents, who claim that repeated warnings regarding the growing stray dog population were ignored by civic authorities.
According to family members, the attack happened suddenly when a group of stray dogs lunged at the child. Nityashri was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital to treat deep lacerations on her face. While medical professionals confirmed that the child’s condition is now stable and her life is not in danger, they emphasised that facial wounds in children require careful long-term monitoring. The victim’s father, an auto-rickshaw driver, expressed the emotional and financial toll of the incident. He noted that the family had to opt for private medical care due to the urgency of the situation, making the treatment costs difficult for them to manage.
The attack has galvanised the local community, leading to a protest at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) office. Residents of Vasudev Reddy Nagar Colony allege that they have lodged numerous complaints, both in person and via online portals, regarding the stray dog menace in their neighborhood. Residents Protest GHMC Inaction
“We have been complaining about stray dogs in this area for months, but nothing was done,” one resident told local media. Community members reported that the dogs roam freely in the colony, particularly during the early morning and evening hours, posing a constant risk to children and the elderly.
The GHMC is now under scrutiny for its perceived failure to manage the stray dog population through sterilisation and vaccination programs. Protesters have warned that they will escalate their demonstrations and stage a sit-in at the GHMC office if concrete steps are not taken to ensure public safety. While GHMC officials have not yet released a formal statement, department sources indicate that the matter has been brought to the attention of the relevant veterinary and sanitation wings.
