The Hyderabad Prohibition and Excise Department on Monday arrested a former software engineer for allegedly cultivating marijuana on the terrace of his residence. Authorities seized 17 cannabis plants from the property, which officials estimate could have yielded approximately 10 kilograms of ganja. The accused, identified as Ch Shashidhar, resides in East Gandhinagar, Nacharam. According to excise officials, Shashidhar previously worked in the IT sector but left his professional career after struggling with substance addiction. The raid was conducted by the Rangareddy District Enforcement team following specific intelligence regarding the illegal cultivation. Assistant Commissioner of the Excise and Prohibition Department, R Kishan, stated that Shashidhar’s addiction had escalated to a point where he was reportedly spending his entire salary on the drug. After leaving his job and facing a lack of funds to sustain the habit, he allegedly procured seeds and began growing the plants in pots on his terrace for personal consumption. The enforcement team, led by a local inspector, discovered the nursery during a targeted search of the premises. Investigative officials noted that the transition from consumer to cultivator is a trend they are monitoring closely in urban residential areas.
