Lucknow, January 23: A 20-year-old medical aspirant in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district allegedly amputated his own foot in a desperate bid to qualify for the disability quota in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). The youth, identified as Suraj Bhaskar, reportedly staged a violent attack to cover up the self-inflicted injury after failing the competitive exam twice. Police officials confirmed on Wednesday that the elaborate plot was uncovered following inconsistencies in the victim’s testimony and digital evidence.

The Staged Attack by Suraj Bhaskar

The incident surfaced on Sunday when Suraj’s elder brother, Akash Bhaskar, reported to the police that "unidentified assailants" had ambushed Suraj in Khalilpur village. According to the initial complaint, the attackers allegedly assaulted Suraj until he was unconscious and severed his foot before fleeing the scene. Uttar Pradesh Shocker: Man Dies by Suicide After Wife Refuses To Cook Egg Curry in Banda, Probe Launched.

Based on this report, a criminal case was registered, and an investigation was launched under the supervision of City Circle Officer Goldy Gupta. Suraj was admitted to a private hospital, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment for his injuries.

Inconsistencies and Evidence Against Suraj Bhaskar

As the investigation progressed, detectives noted several discrepancies in the sequence of events. Forensic examination of the scene and a review of Suraj’s mobile phone records raised suspicions. According to Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Srivastava, questioning a woman whose contact appeared frequently in Suraj's call logs provided further leads that contradicted the "assault" narrative.

The turning point in the probe was the recovery of Suraj's personal diary. Inside, investigators found the phrase, "I will become an MBBS doctor in 2026", written repeatedly. Police stated that the pressure of failing the NEET exam twice had led to significant mental stress, prompting the youth to devise a plan to gain admission through the five per cent reservation reserved for Persons with Disabilities (PwD).

Tactical Self-Harm for Admission

Police allege that Suraj intentionally amputated his foot to meet the physical disability criteria required for the quota. By framing the injury as the result of a violent crime, he reportedly hoped to avoid suspicion while securing the medical certificate necessary for his third attempt at the entrance exam. Uttar Pradesh Shocker: Man Kills Live-In Partner, Returns Home To Prepare for Wedding With Another Woman; Accused Arrested.

Legal Implications

While the motive has been established, authorities face a unique legal challenge. Because the injury was self-inflicted and the primary "victim" is also the perpetrator of the fabrication, police are currently seeking expert legal opinion. They aim to determine which sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) apply to filing a false police report and misleading a criminal investigation.
