The apex medical research body stated on Thursday that its guidance on seasonal influenza vaccination is rooted in scientific evidence and global recommendations set by the World Health Organization (WHO). ICMR noted that the recent reports alleging non-availability appear to stem from a clinical note issued to medical practitioners approximately two months ago, rather than any new policy or advisory. ICMR emphasized that both Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere vaccine variants available in the market are effective against the H1N1 strain currently circulating in India. While the Northern Hemisphere formulation remains preferable according to clinical guidelines, the health body advised that the Southern Hemisphere variant serves as an effective alternative if the former is unavailable.
Seasonal influenza shots are particularly recommended for high-risk and vulnerable demographics prone to severe disease complications. These groups include elderly individuals, pregnant women, immunocompromised patients, and people with underlying chronic health conditions. Unlike certain immunizations that provide long-term protection, influenza vaccines require periodic updates to match changing virus strains.
