Indian Embassy Ljubljana Defacement: India Demands Action After Embassy Premises Defaced in Slovenia
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has condemned the vandalism of the Indian Embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where anti-India slogans were painted on the premises. India has demanded that Slovenian authorities identify and hold the perpetrators accountable, citing the inviolability of diplomatic missions under the Vienna Convention.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a strong condemnation following the defacement of the Indian Embassy premises in Ljubljana, Slovenia. New Delhi has formally taken up the matter with Slovenian authorities, demanding that the individuals responsible for the vandalism be identified and held accountable. The incident, which reportedly occurred on Monday, August 10, is alleged to have been carried out by anti-India elements.
While official statements did not specify the group, sources familiar with the matter indicated that pro-Khalistan elements were likely involved in painting anti-India slogans on the embassy walls.
Diplomatic Premises ‘Inviolable’
In its official statement, the MEA emphasised the obligations of host nations under international law, noting that the security of diplomatic missions is paramount, reported PTI. "We condemn the defacement of the premises of our Embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia by anti-India elements," the ministry stated. "Under the Vienna Convention, diplomatic premises are inviolable and must be protected. We have taken up the matter strongly with Slovenian authorities, both in New Delhi and in Ljubljana, so that the perpetrators behind such reprehensible acts are held accountable," the MEA said.
Beyond the immediate demand for justice, the Indian government called on international law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant regarding what it termed "hateful propaganda and disinformation" being disseminated by such groups.
Recent Pattern of Incidents
The vandalism in Slovenia adds to a series of similar incidents targeting Indian diplomatic missions globally in recent years. Pro-Khalistan activists have previously targeted Indian consulates and embassies in countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, frequently utilising graffiti and protest activity to voice separatist sentiments.
Bilateral Ties Remain Unaffected
The incident occurs against a backdrop of strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation between India and Slovenia. Last month, India’s Ambassador to Slovenia, Amit Narang, met with Slovenia’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tone Kajzer, to discuss deepening the partnership between the two nations. During that meeting, Ambassador Narang delivered a personal letter of congratulations from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to his Slovenian counterpart. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to elevating bilateral ties into a mutually beneficial partnership, suggesting that the recent act of vandalism is viewed by New Delhi as the work of fringe elements rather than a reflection of state-to-state relations. Authorities in Ljubljana are expected to investigate the breach of security as India continues to press for firm action against those responsible.
