A 23-year-old cab driver has been arrested for allegedly s*xually assaulting an IndiGo cabin crew member after diverting his vehicle to an isolated location while ferrying her to Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport in Hyderabad. Police said the accused was arrested on Tuesday, July 21, following the woman's complaint and has been remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.

The accused has been identified as Errapogu Prashanth Kumar, also known as Errapogu Prashanth, a resident of Shamshabad mandal in Telangana's Rangareddy district. The incident allegedly took place on Monday afternoon when the woman was travelling to the airport for her night shift in a cab assigned for her commute.

Cab Driver Allegedly Took Detour Near Airport

According to the police, the driver allegedly diverted the vehicle from its usual route and stopped near an isolated under-construction area, including a site near an under-construction school, about three kilometres from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad.

Police said the driver parked the cab on the roadside after claiming he needed to use the washroom. Investigators alleged that he then returned to the rear seat of the vehicle and s*xually assaulted the woman.

According to police, the woman resisted the alleged assault and managed to escape from the spot, following which the accused allegedly fled.

Police Arrest Accused

The victim later approached the Airport Outpost Police in Shamshabad and lodged a complaint detailing the incident. Based on the complaint, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport Police registered a case and launched an investigation.

Acting on specific information, police tracked down and arrested Errapogu Prashanth on Tuesday morning. Police said that during interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to the offence. After completing the mandatory medical examination, he was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation into the case is continuing.

In the aftermath of the incident, airport authorities reviewed the safety protocols and transportation arrangements for employees travelling to and from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, particularly those working late-night and early-morning shifts.

The review comes as authorities examine measures aimed at strengthening the safety of employees using company-arranged transport services.
