Srinagar, February 10: Security forces on Sunday gunned down five terrorists during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir. According to a tweet by ANI, a gunfight broke out between security forces and militants in Kellam Devsar area in Kulgam district on Sunday morning during a search operation. Bodies of the slain militants have been recovered while their identity is yet to be ascertained. The Police has also recovered weapons and warlike stores from the site. Heavy stone pelting is currently underway in the area.  According to SP Pani, IG Kashmir, the security forces cordoned the area on the basis of specific inputs. "During the exchange of fire, 5 terrorists were killed, arms and ammunition have been recovered. There has been no collateral damage & the encounter site has been cleared", Pani added.

According to the latest details, four CRPF personnel have sustained injuries during the operation. Reports inform that the gunfight broke out after the Police, Rashtriya Rifles and the CRPF launched an operation in Kellam village after a tip-off about the presence of militants in the area. Jammu and Kashmir Encounter: Two Terrorists Killed. 

Earlier this month on February 1, two terrorists from militant outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed were killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. In a separate encounter on January 26, two terrorists were killed after a gunfight with security forces on the outskirts of Srinagar. According to a report by PTI, in 2018, the gunfight between security forces and terrorists were witnessed in 12 of the 22 districts of Jammu and Kashmir with Kupwara accounting for the highest number of terrorists (52) killed in such encounters.  Reports inform that of the total 256 militants killed in 2018, south Kashmir recorded the highest number of killings (127 terrorists) followed by north Kashmir (93 terrorists) and central Kashmir (24 terrorists).
