An Army officer’s wife has been booked by Jammu and Kashmir Police for alleged espionage over suspected links with foreign intelligence operatives, including individuals linked to China. The investigation is examining whether she collected or shared sensitive defence-related information while working on research papers and articles.

The case was registered at Gandhi Nagar Police Station in Jammu on Friday, October 16, under the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to news reports published on Sunday, October 18. The accused, who hails from Telangana and currently resides in Jammu, has been questioned by investigators but has not been arrested, according to PTI reports. How the Alleged Espionage Network Came Under Scrutiny

According to officials cited in media reports, investigators are examining the woman’s research activities and her interactions with foreign nationals suspected of having links to intelligence agencies. The alleged contacts reportedly approached her under the guise of academic researchers and encouraged her to prepare articles on subjects ranging from environmental issues and geopolitics to defence and national security. Investigators suspect that the research work may have been used to obtain information of strategic importance.

The case came under scrutiny following intelligence inputs about her alleged communications with foreign-based contacts. Police are investigating how these connections were established and whether any protected information was transmitted.

What the FIR Says

The FIR, numbered 290/2026, invokes Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, along with Sections 152 and 61(2) of the BNS. These provisions concern specified offences involving sensitive official information, threats to India's sovereignty and unity, and criminal conspiracy. Police are investigating the nature of the woman’s research, her foreign contacts and whether any information was communicated to suspected intelligence operatives. Reports citing officials also indicate that digital evidence and the alleged communication channels are under scrutiny. However, the precise nature of any material allegedly transferred has not been conclusively established.

Investigation Continues, No Arrest Reported

As of October 18, the woman had not been arrested, and preliminary inquiries had not established that she had actually shared sensitive information with foreign operatives, according to PTI reports. The investigation is expected to determine whether the allegations are supported by evidence and whether any foreign intelligence network was involved.
