JNU Sacks Congress MP Bimol Akoijam As Professor Over Harassment Allegations
Jawaharlal Nehru University has dismissed Congress Lok Sabha MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from its faculty following an internal inquiry into s*xual harassment allegations. Eleven students had reportedly filed complaints against the Inner Manipur MP, who has denied the charges.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has dismissed Congress Lok Sabha MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from his position as a professor following an internal inquiry into s*xual harassment allegations. The dismissal has taken immediate effect, with the university's Internal Committee (IC) recommending major punishment against the academic.
Akoijam, who represents Inner Manipur in the Lok Sabha, was a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under JNU's School of Social Sciences. The dismissal order was signed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Santishree D. Pandit.

"Upon following the due process and considering all available facts and as per the report of the Internal Committee (IC), the punishment of dismissal from the services of the University is hereby imposed on Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam," the order stated.
Eleven Students Filed Complaints Against Bimol Akoijam
According to reports, 11 students had filed complaints with JNU's Internal Committee, alleging inappropriate conduct by the professor. The allegations included inappropriate remarks in classrooms, unwanted advances at gatherings and misconduct during academic interactions. The complaints reportedly emerged after a student shared an account of alleged inappropriate behaviour following viva examinations. Other students subsequently came forward with their own allegations.
The university's action followed the internal inquiry and the committee's recommendation for major punishment.
Congress MP Bimol Akoijam Denies Allegations
Akoijam has consistently denied the allegations, describing them as false and motivated.
The Congress leader is the Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur. His dismissal from JNU follows the university's internal disciplinary proceedings, which concluded with the recommendation for his removal from service.
The case has drawn attention because Akoijam holds both an academic position at one of India's leading universities and an elected position in Parliament.
