Nandini milk prices in Karnataka are set to increase by up to ₹8 per litre from November 1, following the state Cabinet’s approval of a proposed price revision. If the full increase is implemented, the price of toned milk sold in the blue packet will rise from ₹46 to ₹54 per litre. However, the revised rates remain subject to the required Election Commission clearance and a final decision on implementation.

The proposed hike was approved by the Karnataka Cabinet on October 6. The government had deferred the formal announcement because the Model Code of Conduct was in force for Legislative Council elections. Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has been authorised to take the final call on the extent of the increase and its implementation.

Nandini Milk Price Hike: How Much Will Consumers Pay?

Under the proposal, the price of Nandini toned milk could increase by ₹8 per litre if the entire hike is passed on to consumers. The blue-packet toned milk, currently priced at ₹46 per litre, would then cost ₹54. Consumers purchasing larger quantities of milk would face a corresponding increase in their daily household expenses. Of the proposed ₹8 increase, ₹6 is expected to go towards payments to milk producers, while the remaining ₹2 would help milk unions meet their operating expenses. Why Milk Prices Are Rising in Maharashtra by INR 2 per Litre From August 11.

Why Has Karnataka Proposed a Milk Price Increase?

Karnataka’s cooperative milk producers’ unions have sought higher milk prices, citing rising dairy farming and operational costs. The unions have pointed to increasing prices of cattle feed, fodder and veterinary medicines, along with higher transportation and plastic packaging expenses. Drought-related crop losses and fodder shortages have also placed additional pressure on dairy farmers.

Milk union representatives have argued that farmers need better returns to sustain milk production and meet the rising cost of maintaining cattle. They have also highlighted differences in milk procurement prices between Karnataka and neighbouring states as a reason for seeking a revision.

Karnataka Milk Procurement Prices Compared With Other States

According to figures cited by milk union representatives, toned milk procurement prices were around ₹35 per litre in Karnataka, compared with ₹41.50 in Andhra Pradesh, ₹41.80 in Kerala, ₹41 in Maharashtra and ₹42.24 in Tamil Nadu. The unions have argued that the comparatively lower procurement price in Karnataka has put pressure on dairy farmers, particularly as production costs continue to rise. The proposed revision is intended to improve returns to milk producers while helping cooperative unions manage their expenses.

Fifth Nandini Milk Price Revision Since November 2022

If implemented, the proposed increase would mark the fifth revision in Nandini milk prices since November 2022.

The previous price revisions were:

  • November 2022: Increase of ₹3 per litre.
  • July 2023: Increase of ₹3 per litre.
  • June 2024: Increase of ₹2 per litre.
  • March 2025: Increase of ₹4 per litre.
  • November 2026: Proposed increase of up to ₹8 per litre.

In June 2024, consumers received an additional 50 ml of milk for every litre following the price revision. The Karnataka Milk Federation later withdrew the additional quantity.

Election Commission Clearance and Final Decision Awaited

The proposed increase comes amid the Model Code of Conduct for Legislative Council elections. The state government is required to obtain the necessary Election Commission clearance before implementing the hike. While November 1 has been indicated as the likely effective date, the final consumer prices and implementation details depend on the government's decision and the required clearance.

Consumers will therefore need to await the formal announcement to confirm the revised rates for different Nandini milk varieties. Nandini is marketed by the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), the state's cooperative dairy federation. The proposed price revision reflects the challenge of balancing affordable milk prices for consumers with the need to provide adequate returns to dairy farmers.
