A middle-aged man from Karnataka is recovering in a hospital after allegedly severing his own leg while intoxicated in a forest near Madanapalle, Andhra Pradesh. The individual, identified as Sriramulu from Narayanahalli village, reportedly took the extreme step on Sunday following severe emotional distress caused by the breakdown of his marriage. Shepherds discovery of the victim in the Madina Konda forest area led to an emergency rescue and his subsequent transport to a government medical facility.
The incident follows a period of reported depression for Sriramulu after his wife, Pavithra, allegedly left him to elope with another man. Seeking emotional support, Sriramulu had recently traveled from his home in Chintamani taluk, Karnataka, to stay with his sister, Siddamma, in the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh. Madanapalle, where the incident occurred, is a border town located approximately 100 kilometers from Bengaluru. On Sunday, Sriramulu entered the Madina Konda forest area alone. According to preliminary reports, he consumed a significant quantity of alcohol before using a knife to inflict the life-threatening injury upon himself. The remote nature of the location meant the victim remained undiscovered until local shepherds grazing their livestock heard his cries or spotted him in the brush.
Local residents and the shepherds coordinated to move Sriramulu from the forest to a nearby government hospital. Medical staff are currently monitoring his condition, which was described as critical upon arrival due to blood loss. While he is receiving emergency treatment, the extent of the permanent damage to his limb has not been officially confirmed by hospital authorities. The Madanapalle police have initiated an inquiry into the matter to determine the exact sequence of events. While initial findings suggest the injury was self-inflicted during a state of intoxication and mental health crisis, officials are speaking with family members and witnesses to rule out foul play. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains open as authorities wait to record a formal statement from Sriramulu once he is deemed medically fit.
